KAMPALA, Uganda — Nalukoola Luyimbazi was sworn in Wednesday as the new member of parliament for Kawempe North, ending months of uncertainty in the constituency.
Luyimbazi’s predecessor, Muhammad Ssegirinya, had been absent for an extended period, leaving a leadership vacuum.
During the ceremony, Luyimbazi took the oath of allegiance, pledging to serve the people of Kawempe with diligence and integrity.
He thanked the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, for ensuring his swift swearing-in despite parliamentary sittings being in recess.
“The people of Kawempe have endured a long period without a voice in parliament. Today, they can finally feel represented,” Luyimbazi said.
He also requested additional time on the parliamentary floor to address pressing issues in Kawempe North, arguing that key concerns had not been adequately raised.
Luyimbazi’s swearing-in was celebrated by the National Unity Platform party, with leader Robert Kyagulanyi in attendance.
Speaker Among congratulated Luyimbazi and the party, acknowledging the significance of their victory.
Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi welcomed Luyimbazi to parliament, urging him to remain steadfast in the party’s values.
Luyimbazi also recognized journalists for their courageous coverage of Uganda’s political landscape, condemning violence and harassment against them.
He criticized security forces for their heavy-handed approach during elections and called on President Yoweri Museveni to ensure law enforcement officers operate within professional boundaries.
The Speaker directed the Clerk to Parliament to grant Luyimbazi all privileges entitled to an MP, including a car, fuel and other benefits.
