Kampala, Uganda — As the clock ticks down on UMEME’s reign as Uganda’s primary electricity distributor, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is reassuring customers that their lights will stay on.
In a move aimed at calming nerves, UEDCL has guaranteed a seamless transition of electricity distribution services, ensuring that customers experience no disruptions to their power supply.
“We understand that change can be unsettling, but we want to assure our customers that we have everything under control,” a UEDCL spokesperson said. “Our team has been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition, and we are confident that our customers will not notice any difference.”
The takeover, slated for March 31, 2025, marks the end of UMEME’s era as Uganda’s primary electricity distributor. Despite unresolved negotiations over UMEME’s buyout package, UEDCL has reaffirmed its commitment to providing stable and reliable electricity distribution services.
To alleviate customer concerns, UEDCL has confirmed that all key services will remain functional. Yaka token purchases will still be available through MTN, Airtel, and fintech platforms, and there will be no changes to meter numbers or account details.
Postpaid customers will continue making payments through their usual banks and service providers, and those awaiting new meter connections will not be required to pay any extra fees beyond the standard charges set by regulatory authorities.
UEDCL has also reassured customers that electricity tariffs will remain unchanged for now, with any adjustments requiring approval from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
As the transition date approaches, UEDCL has urged customers to be vigilant against fraudulent activities. The company warned that unauthorized individuals might attempt to remove electricity meters or spread misinformation.
Customers are advised to rely only on official communication channels and report any suspicious activity to the nearest service center, police, or local authorities.
