The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has urged Muslims across the country to observe the sky on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025, to determine the end of Ramadan and the date for Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

In a press release issued on Thursday, Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, Director of Sharia at UMSC, highlighted the significance of this observation. He explained that if the crescent moon is sighted on March 29, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30.

“I would like to request Muslims in Uganda to watch out for the sight of the moon in the evening of Saturday, 29th March 2025, because this will be the 29th day of Ramadhan 1446AH,” Dr. Lubanga stated.

The Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, resulting in the exact date of Eid varying each year. This year, the celebration is expected to fall on either March 30 or March 31, depending on the moon sighting.

Dr. Lubanga provided contact numbers for individuals who observe the crescent moon or receive credible reports regarding its sighting. “Whoever sights the moon or possesses reliable information regarding this matter is requested to pass the information to UMSC officials,” he said.

As the Muslim community prepares for Eid, Dr. Lubanga extended his best wishes, encouraging all to celebrate in accordance with Islamic teachings.
