KAMPALA, Uganda — The Kingdom of Buganda expressed concern Monday over a map of Uganda circulating on social media that omits Buganda, calling it a deliberate and recurring effort to distort history.
In a statement, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, spokesperson for the kingdom, said this was not the first time such an incident has occurred.
“In 2018, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics released a map that did not include Buganda,” Kazibwe said. “During the Kabaka’s 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria in Masaka, His Majesty publicly condemned this action.”
Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II strongly condemned similar omissions during his birthday celebrations, Kazibwe said.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has also spoken out against similar occurrences, raising awareness among the people of Buganda and Uganda, the statement said.
Kazibwe said the kingdom recently discovered another map circulating on social media that excludes Buganda while recognizing other kingdoms.
“This is a deliberate attempt to divert Buganda from its objectives,” Kazibwe said. “As the spokesperson of Buganda Kingdom, I want to make it clear that this move will not succeed.”
Kazibwe encouraged the people of Buganda to remain calm and resilient, reassuring them that the kingdom’s legacy remains intact.
“No person can eliminate Buganda from the map of Uganda and rub away its historical significance in the formation of Uganda,” Kazibwe said. “Let’s remain focused on achieving the five key aspirational tenets of the Kingdom.”
