FAITH, HOPE AND JOY! Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko Takes the Reins as Bishop of West Buganda Diocese

KAKO, Uganda — Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko was consecrated and enthroned Sunday as the 7th bishop of the West Buganda Diocese at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Nsereko succeeds Rt. Rev. Henry Katumba Tamale, who led the diocese for eight years and seven months.

In a powerful sermon, Rev. Samuel George Bogere Egesa, Bishop of the Bukedi Diocese, urged believers to avoid sinful behaviors such as corruption and brutality. He particularly condemned the actions of government security agents who use excessive force against civilians.

Bishop Egesa drew inspiration from the biblical story of Zacchaeus, comparing Uganda’s present situation to people climbing different “trees” of corruption, hypocrisy, immorality, unkindness and drunkenness.

“What kind of tree are you climbing?” he challenged the congregation.

Bishop Egesa also advised Anglicans in West Buganda not to compare Bishop Nsereko to his predecessor, emphasizing that each leader is uniquely gifted for their role in the Church.

“By adopting clean cooking solutions, we are not only improving the health and well-being of our students and staff, but also contributing to a more sustainable future,” Bishop Egesa said.

The ceremony was presided over by His Grace Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda. Bishop-elect Nsereko took the oath, made his declaration and pledged to uphold the Church’s constitution and canons, officially assuming his new role.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa, representing President Yoweri Museveni, congratulated Bishop Nsereko and assured him of the government’s support.

“Government is committed to supporting the Church in its development endeavors,” Nankabirwa said.

She delivered a Toyota vehicle from the President and an additional contribution of 10 million Ugandan shillings from the NRM MPs from Buganda.

During the event, Nankabirwa was informed about the ongoing transformer issue in Kako. She promised the issue would be resolved soon.

The consecration of Bishop Nsereko marks a new chapter for the West Buganda Diocese, with blessings and support from both the Church and the government.
