KAMPALA, Uganda  — Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement party has announced a significant surge in membership, boasting 20.7 million registered members, up from 18 million last year.

“The update process, which began in March last year, has contributed to the steady rise in membership,” said Richard Todwong, the party’s Secretary General, during a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Kampala.

Todwong revealed that the party has gained an additional two million members since last year. “From the 18.3 million members we had, we now have 20.7 million,” he said.

Todwong clarified that the figures include individuals aged 16 and above who joined during the registration process. However, for electoral purposes, the party will filter out those below 18 to ensure an accurate count of eligible voters.

“Of the 20.7 million, those below 18 years are going to be removed from that list, and then we shall remain with the exact number of voters,” Todwong explained.

Addressing skepticism surrounding the party’s membership figures, Todwong assured the public that a thorough verification process was conducted to maintain accuracy.

“We are very confident in what we are saying. We have gone through several stages to verify this data,” Todwong said.

As the finalization of the register nears completion, the NRM is set to release its official party register along with the election roadmap in the coming weeks.

While leading the media on a tour of the NRM Data Centre, Todwong announced that the party has commenced a 10-day final verification process of its membership register to ensure credible internal elections.

“We are conducting a thorough quality control exercise on our party membership register. Our expert team is rigorously crosschecking village details, NINs, and village codes to guarantee a transparent and credible internal election,” Todwong stated.

He further revealed that the party will soon unveil its roadmap for internal structural elections.
