Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the Kawempe North by-election, has withdrawn her petition seeking a vote recount.
The Electoral Commission’s decision to gazette the election results, officially published in the Uganda Gazette on March 24, made the petition irrelevant, according to her legal team. This move by the Electoral Commission confirmed Nalukoola Luyimbazi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) as the winner.
David Lewis Rubongoya, the secretary general of NUP, had earlier expressed confidence that a recount would not change the results. “Unless Nambi has somehow performed magic to change the votes, a recount would still result in her losing,” he remarked.
The withdrawal of the petition marks a significant development in the Kawempe North by-election saga. The seat was left vacant following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9.
