KAMPALA, Uganda — At least seven people, including a U.S. Embassy staff member, were killed after heavy floods swept through Uganda’s capital, Kampala, following a torrential downpour Wednesday morning.

The severe rainfall caused widespread destruction, including motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away, and significant property damage across the city, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.

Among the victims was Bogere George, a U.S. Embassy employee who drowned while riding a motorcycle in Luteete, Kasangati Town Council. Police retrieved his body, along with that of another unidentified male adult.

Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, and two young children, Otim Kisa Eliza, 3, and Ochaka Chon, 11 months, drowned inside their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto, due to rising floodwaters.

Rescue teams remain on the ground, assessing the situation and providing assistance. Authorities urge the public to take precautions during heavy rains and avoid unnecessary movement to prevent accidents.

Boda boda riders are advised not to cross flooded roads and wait for water levels to recede before proceeding. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Police will provide further updates as more information becomes available. “We extend our deepest condolences to the affected families and urge everyone to remain vigilant during this rainy season,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
