Over the weekend, devastating floods triggered by the overflowing of River Mubuku destroyed at least 65 houses in Karusandara Sub-county, Kasese District.
According to Joseph Isingoma, the district planner, the flooding, which submerged homes and swept away property, has left scores of residents stranded and in urgent need of assistance.
River Mubuku, notorious for causing destruction during the rainy season, burst its banks after heavy downpours, unleashing torrents of water into surrounding villages.
“Families have lost shelter, household items, and crops, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region,” Joseph Isingoma.
Locals have called for urgent intervention from the government and humanitarian agencies to provide relief items, including food, shelter, and medical support for the affected families.
Kasese District has been prone to flooding disasters, with River Mubuku and other water bodies frequently overflowing due to heavy rains.
Authorities have been urged to implement long-term mitigation measures, such as constructing stronger embankments and relocating highly vulnerable communities to safer areas.
