KAMPALA — As Uganda approaches the Easter weekend, the Uganda Police Force, through spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, is advising the public to exercise increased vigilance and prioritize safety during a period anticipated to have heightened travel, religious gatherings, and social celebrations.
Rusoke emphasized that while Easter is a significant religious holiday, the associated increase in public gatherings at churches, residences, and public venues can create opportunities for criminal activity.
“Easter is a time when communities gather in large numbers at churches, homes, and public venues. This increased activity unfortunately raises vulnerability,” Rusoke stated in the police’s Easter advisory.
He underscored the importance of both individual and community responsibility in safeguarding lives and property during the holiday period.
“We urge Ugandans to maintain heightened vigilance and awareness during the Easter festivities. Let’s not give room to those with criminal intentions,” Rusoke said.
Addressing the expected high attendance at religious services, Rusoke called for close coordination between places of worship and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of congregants. He advised individuals to refrain from carrying unnecessary valuables and to remain attentive to their belongings in public spaces.
“Churches should work with nearby police units to ensure controlled access, visible security, and orderly movement,” Rusoke advised.
In addition to public event security, Rusoke highlighted the need for enhanced home and neighborhood safety measures. Residents are encouraged to activate or reinforce neighborhood watch programs, improve external lighting around properties, and ensure the security of entry points to homes and businesses.
With a predicted surge in travel during the extended Easter weekend, Rusoke issued a strong appeal for responsible road use. He urged drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, avoid speeding, and abstain from operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
“We’ve lost far too many lives during previous holidays due to recklessness on the roads. Let’s be responsible behind the wheel,” Rusoke emphasized.
Concluding the advisory, Rusoke conveyed Easter greetings on behalf of the Uganda Police Force, assuring the public of increased police deployments and readily available rapid response teams throughout the holiday.
“We wish every Ugandan a safe and peaceful Easter. Let us all play our part to ensure this season is remembered for joy not tragedy,” Rusoke stated.
