The Kampala Archdiocese has announced a special Requiem Mass in honor of the late Pope Francis, to be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Lubaga Cathedral.
The Mass, which is set to begin at 12:00 noon, will be presided over by the Papal Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco.
The announcement was made in an official communication issued by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe.
“Following the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, on behalf of His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala, I hereby communicate that there will be a Requiem Mass at Lubaga Cathedral,” Fr. Ssentumbwe stated.
He further noted that a condolence book has been opened at the cathedral for the faithful to write messages of sympathy and pay their final respects to the late pontiff.
The Archdiocese has called upon all priests, religious, and lay faithful to join in prayer for the eternal repose of Pope Francis.
“We continue to pray for a peaceful repose of the soul of Pope Francis in our Homes, Parishes and Prayer Centers,” Fr. Ssentumbwe added.
Pope Francis, who passed away on April 20, 2025, at the age of 88, was widely admired for his humility, compassion, and progressive approach to global and church issues.
His death marks the end of a transformative papacy defined by a legacy of service, interfaith dialogue, and steadfast dedication to the poor and marginalized.
The Friday Mass is expected to draw thousands of Catholics and well-wishers from across Uganda in a united moment of mourning and remembrance.
