The Uganda Police Force has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Police Constable Chemonges Suleiman, who was tragically attacked by an irate mob while on duty in Ibanda District.
The 28-year-old officer, attached to Bisheshe Police Station, was guarding the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, an inmate who had died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison.
The incident occurred when the funeral gathering turned violent, leading to the fatal attack on PC Chemonges.
The police force has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the senseless act of violence, emphasizing that such actions undermine the rule of law and the safety of law enforcement officers.
Simon Kasasira, the Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson, reported that law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene, recovering an SMG rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition. Unfortunately, PC Chemonges had already succumbed to his injuries.
His body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary as investigations into the tragic act began.
Police has vowed to bring all those responsible to justice, stressing that mob violence is not only unlawful but also poses a serious threat to public order and security.
“We want to assure the public that all suspects involved in this criminal act shall be arrested and brought to book,” a police spokesperson stated.
Authorities have called on the public to avoid mob justice and instead report grievances through lawful channels. Police are working with local leaders and eyewitnesses to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The killing of PC Chemonges has sent shockwaves throughout the police force, highlighting the dangers faced by officers while maintaining peace and security.
