A boda boda rider set a house ablaze, killing six members of his own family in a horrifying incident that has left the community of Bukasa Kirinya in Bweyogerere, Kira Town Council, Wakiso District in deep shock and grief.
The tragic event occurred after midnight at the residence of 45-year-old Ssekabira Fred, who is believed to have committed suicide following a domestic misunderstanding with his wife.
Shock and grief engulfed residents after news broke that six lives had been lost in the inferno. Among the deceased were five family members and Ssekabira himself.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, confirmed the identities of the victims.
“The five family members are Gonja Winniefred aged 35 the mother, Nabunya Gloria, 20 years Senior Six student, Nakakira Peace, 16 years Senior Two student, Nabula Brian, 7, and Nakamya Helena, 9 years, a pupil at Kirinya Church of Uganda Primary School.”
“It is alleged that at approximately 3:00 AM, a loud blast was heard from the residence of one Ssekabira Fred,” Owoyesigyire stated.
He added that concerned neighbours rushed to offer assistance, but the fire had already engulfed the house, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Police were alerted, and the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services team responded swiftly, successfully containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby homes.
However, during their inspection of the ruins, responders discovered six bodies in the debris.
Owoyesigyire further noted, “The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established.”
Further details emerged from the Bweyogerere boda boda stage where the deceased used to work. Kabali James, the chairman at the stage, told police,
“Late Ssekabira sold his motorcycle at 1.5 million shillings and got paid 1 million cash and received balance of 500,000 on Tuesday morning.”
Kabali added that Ssekabira made disturbing comments before the incident.
“On Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, he keeps on telling his friends at stage to prepare for his burial, because that was his last day in life,” says Kabali.
A friend of the deceased also suggested possible intent. “We believe he might have been committed suicide by killing himself and family members.”
However, Owoyesigyire cautioned that no conclusions have been drawn yet. “This line of inquiry remains under investigation and is yet to be confirmed.”
The six bodies have been transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
“We wish to express our sincere condolences to the affected family and community. We remain committed
