In a bid to ensure his subjects live healthy lives, His Royal Highness Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV has urged residents of Tooro Kingdom to embrace the recently launched malaria immunization campaign by ensuring that all eligible children receive the vaccine.
The King made the remarks while officiating the launch of the campaign at Nyeika Hotel in Fort Portal City on Wednesday 30.
He emphasized that malaria remains one of the most pressing health concerns in the region and called for collective action in the fight against the disease.
“I urge the general public to participate in the malaria immunization program by allowing their children who are in the required age bracket to be immunized,” said Omukama Oyo.
Underscoring the seriousness of the issue, King Oyo revealed that malaria remains the leading health challenge in Tooro Kingdom, urging people to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Health to eradicate it.
“It has come to my attention that malaria constitutes the foremost health challenge in Tooro, accounting for nearly 30% of outpatient visits and 20% of hospital fatalities, with children under the age of five bearing the heaviest burden,” he noted.
The King extended his gratitude to various stakeholders and officials who attended the launch, highlighting the need for ongoing community mobilization and support. “A healthy person is a hardworking person,” he added.
The launch was attended by several dignitaries, including the President’s Representative for Fort Portal City, Mr. Stanley Bayole, also known as Ddada Busoga. He echoed the King’s sentiments, calling on healthcare workers to foster collaboration with local communities.
“I urge the health personnels to coordinate with the community members in this cause,” Mr. Stanley stated.
He went on to commend cultural and religious leaders for championing the welfare of the people and issued a stern warning to any individuals who may attempt to hinder the progress of the program.
“Those who will disturb the immunization system should obey and comply with the health program of malaria immunization in their communities,” he warned.
State Minister for Primary Health Care, Hon. Margaret Muhanga, who also spoke at the event, reassured the public of the safety and effectiveness of the malaria vaccines.
“The vaccines are approved therefore, they should allow their children to be immunized hence malaria-free communities,” she affirmed.
She further acknowledged and appreciated the unity and collaboration exhibited by the RCC, the King, and various religious and cultural leaders throughout the launch.
The immunization campaign is set to roll out across Fort Portal City and its surrounding areas, with health authorities hopeful that the King’s appeal and community cooperation will pave the way for a malaria-free Tooro.
