In a robust display of preparedness and inter-agency coordination, the Uganda Police Force has deployed over 7,000 security operatives both overt and covert to safeguard the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo slated for June 3, 2025.

On Friday, the Director of Operations, AIGP Mwesigwa Frank, conducted an on-site inspection at the Namugongo Shrines, assessing the readiness of the multi-agency security apparatus tasked with protecting tens of thousands of pilgrims expected to attend the highly revered religious event.

Commending the deployed personnel for their diligence and discipline, AIGP Mwesigwa noted that the strategic mix of overt visibility and covert surveillance is aimed at deterring any potential threats and ensuring the safety of both local and international pilgrims.

“Our teams are on the ground vigilant and prepared. We are deploying everything from foot patrols and standby response units to mobile squads and K-9 teams. We want every pilgrim to feel safe from the moment they set foot here,” he said.

In addition to security measures, AIGP Mwesigwa highlighted the importance of emergency medical preparedness.

Medical teams are on standby to provide immediate response in case of any health emergencies during the event.

AIGP Mwesigwa also held an inter-agency meeting with the Minister of Health, Dr. Ruth Aceng, and representatives from various security and emergency response agencies.

The meeting focused on harmonizing operational plans around public health, crowd control, and emergency services.

As preparations intensify, the public has been urged to cooperate with security personnel, follow guidelines, and report any suspicious activity.

The annual Martyrs’ Day, commemorating the Ugandan martyrs killed for their faith between 1885 and 1887, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the region and a major pilgrimage for Christians across Africa.

With the deployment of over 7,000 security operatives and integrated support services, authorities are confident that the 2025 celebrations will proceed peacefully and safely.
