Museveni Slams Power Saboteurs: “Stop Vandalising Uganda’s Future”

President Yoweri Museveni has strongly condemned acts of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure, warning that such sabotage undermines government efforts to industrialize the country and uplift rural communities.

While commissioning Pura Organic Agro Tech Limited, a new cassava starch processing factory in Nakasongola, the president expressed his frustration over recent incidents involving the destruction of electricity poles, which have resulted in repeated power outages in some parts of the country.

“I am disappointed by those undermining these investments, including individuals vandalising electricity poles and causing power outages. We will address these challenges,” Museveni said, issuing a stern warning to culprits.

The president noted that stable electricity is a cornerstone of industrial development, especially in rural areas where agro-based factories like Pura Organic Agro Tech are sprouting up. Such facilities, he emphasized, are critical in reducing Uganda’s dependence on imports and creating jobs.

“Medicines are expensive, largely due to our reliance on imported starch from India, so I’m pleased this factory will reduce costs,” he stated, highlighting the link between local cassava starch production and pharmaceutical self-reliance.

Museveni also used the opportunity to rally local processors to go beyond cassava starch and tap into Uganda’s rich diversity of indigenous crops.

“I also encourage local cassava processors to explore indigenous nutritious food varieties to add value,” he urged.

The president commended cassava outgrowers for their resilience and forward thinking, noting that their participation is key to the success of agro-industrial ventures.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting investments and ensuring that acts of sabotage are met with appropriate action.

The commissioning of the cassava processing plant marks a milestone in Uganda’s drive for value addition, rural transformation, and economic independence.
