KASANGATI— Police in Kasangati Division, Wakiso District, have arrested a man believed to be the leader of a criminal network responsible for a string of deadly attacks across Uganda.
Imanantireganya Alfadudu, also known as “Congolese,” was apprehended May 9 in Bulamu Cell, Kasangati Town Council, during an intelligence-led operation, police said Monday.
Authorities suspect Alfadudu played a key role in numerous aggravated robberies and murders in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, Busoga East, Busoga North, Elgon, and Ssezibwa regions.
Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke told reporters during a weekly briefing Monday that the suspect confessed during questioning that he and accomplices, identified as Mozy, Mapengo, and others, used an SAR rifle in multiple violent robberies.
Following Alfadudu’s information, police tracked the weapon to Mayuge District. Rusoke said the rifle was routinely hidden at the home of Ivulungo Bumali in Girigiri Village, Maina Parish, Mpungwe Subcounty, after criminal activities.
A subsequent raid led to the recovery of the SAR rifle, which police believe was stolen during a violent robbery in Mukono in October 2024. Officers also found two hammers, a knife, and several jackets at the residence.
Bumali and his wife were arrested and are assisting with the investigation, according to Rusoke.
“Preliminary findings indicate the recovered firearm was indeed stolen in the Mukono robbery last year. Investigations into the full extent of the criminal network are underway,” Rusoke said.
Authorities are continuing to search for other suspects connected to the gang as they work to understand the scope of their operations, which have instilled fear in several communities.
