MPIIGI, Uganda — A tragic road crash Sunday, May 25, 2025, killed one person and injured six others on the Bunjako–Buwama road in Mpigi District, near Lwafumu Forest.

The accident involved a Toyota Drone, registration number UBM 672G, reportedly belonging to an undisclosed tours and travel company. The vehicle was carrying a group of people for a tour and party in western Uganda.

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, preliminary investigations point to overspeeding and unsafe passenger transport practices as the cause.

“The vehicle reportedly lost control, hit a pavement & overturned—killing 1 passenger instantly & injuring 06 others,” Kananura stated in a Monday update on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Police reports indicate traffic officers at Lungala in Mpigi District had flagged UBM 672G earlier, along with three other vehicles — UBG 649K, UBM 631E, and UAR 351Z — for various violations. These included operating without a valid license, transporting passengers unsafely, careless driving and obscuring registration plates.

While the drivers of the other three vehicles were arrested and detained at Mpigi Police Station, the driver of UBM 672G ignored police orders and fled the crash scene. He remains at large.

“We strongly urge all motorists to comply with the directives by police officers, especially when stopped or directed in any way,” Kananura advised. “What may appear to be an inconvenience could in fact be a critical, life-saving intervention.”

Traffic Police have issued a stern warning to drivers jeopardizing lives by transporting passengers illegally and unsafely, especially during the ongoing high-travel season.

“We are aware of the season, but public safety must not be compromised,” Kananura emphasized, urging all road users to prioritize life and safety.

Investigations into the identity and whereabouts of the fleeing driver are ongoing.

The Buwama road crash adds to a troubling rise in road fatalities across Uganda, raising fresh concerns about traffic law enforcement and road safety compliance.
