MBALE, Uganda – The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) has launched a skilling and equipping workshop in Mbale, targeting 213 military veterans, widows, and their children, the ministry announced Saturday.
The program, organized through the Directorate of Veteran Affairs (DVA), aims to facilitate the economic and social reintegration of beneficiaries.
Speaking at the launch, Commissioner for Rehabilitation, Psychosocial Support, and Reintegration Mabonga Mike commended the beneficiaries for forming a savings and credit cooperative (SACCO), noting it provides a practical way to access government support and improve livelihoods.
Mabonga reiterated the directorate’s commitment to easing the transition from military to civilian life, citing ongoing documentation processes for retiring personnel in Jinja. He also acknowledged government efforts to improve veterans’ welfare, including enhanced retirement benefits and payroll reinstatements.
He encouraged veterans with health concerns to utilize military health services, with severe cases to be referred to the General Military Referral Hospital.
Hon. Mariam Mukhaye, Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale District, thanked MODVA for initiating the training following her appeal. She described the workshop as aligning with President Yoweri Museveni’s goal of poverty reduction through skills development.
However, Mukhaye cautioned against mismanagement within SACCOs, stating that accountability and sustainability plans are crucial for progress.
Mbale Resident District Commissioner George Wopuwa emphasized the government’s support for veterans and urged participants to maintain the discipline and integrity of their military service. He also called on veterans to remain vigilant and promote civil-military cooperation, especially during politically sensitive times.
The workshop covers SACCO formation, financial literacy, and conflict resolution to enhance participants’ resilience and reintegration into civilian communities.
