In a move that has captured public attention and sparked debate, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans for a high-profile gathering of Uganda’s “First Sons” influential male descendants of former heads of state and national leaders.
According to a post on his X page, General Muhoozi announced the President’s sons will soon convened to proclaim their agenda.
“We are going to organize a meeting of President’s sons very soon. Myself, His Majesty the Kabaka, Hon. Akena, General Taban, and Hon. Oryem. We shall proclaim the agenda of the so-called ‘First Sons’.”
The proposed meeting line-up features a powerful cast of political scions including His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, direct heir of Sir Edward Muteesa II, Uganda’s first President and revered monarch of the Buganda KKingdo.
Also on the list is Hon. Jimmy Akena, son of former President Apollo Milton Obote; current MP and leader of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, son of former President Tito Okello Lutwa; currently Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and an influential legislator and General Taban Amin, son of ex-President Idi Amin Dada, will also be part of the discussions.
Gen. Muhoozi revealed that Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze will chair the organising committee, with backing from Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Minister of State for Children and Youth Affairs Balaam Barugahara.
The tentative date for the landmark meeting is set for August 2025.
The announcement has raised curiosity about the agenda and aims of this assembly.
Will it focus on national development, collective advocacy, or political maneuvering? The public awaits clarification on whether it is a symbolic reunion of senior legacies or a serious platform for policy alternatives.
