President Yoweri Museveni has pledged continued government support for Uganda’s war veterans and their families, underscoring their crucial role in securing peace and stability in the country.
Speaking at the 36th National Heroes Day celebrations held in Lyantonde District under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” the President saluted the fighters of the National Resistance Army (NRA) for their resilience during Uganda’s liberation struggle.
“On this Heroes’ Day, I want to salute the fighters who stood firm during the resistance. We shall continue prioritising the welfare of war veterans,” Museveni stated.
To translate this commitment into action, President Museveni announced that he had instructed a comprehensive review of the Ministry of Luweero Triangle’s budget. The ministry is tasked with coordinating support for veterans and communities most affected by the 1981–1986 liberation war.
“The goal is to ensure that one clear problem is solved at a time, without spreading resources too thin through multiple unrelated sectors,” he emphasized.
In a shift from previous government strategies for veteran housing support, Museveni proposed a more participatory and sustainable approach. Rather than constructing full houses, the government would now supply key materials like iron sheets and cement while beneficiary families would contribute bricks and labour.
“We need to focus on practical support for the families of fallen and living war veterans. Instead of building entire houses for war-affected families, the government could supply materials like iron sheets and cement, while the families contribute bricks and labour,” Museveni said.
His proposal comes amid rising calls from war veterans and their families, particularly in the Luweero Triangle, for more responsive and targeted government assistance.
As part of the Heroes Day events, Museveni laid a wreath at a monument in Kaliro Town Council, Lyantonde District, to honour freedom fighters who died during the protracted NRA war.
The event concluded with the awarding of medals to living heroes in recognition of their bravery and contribution to the country’s liberation.
President Museveni also took time to commend the people of Kabula for embracing agriculture as a tool for poverty eradication. He noted their progress in farming as a positive sign for the future.
“I was happy to see that the people of Kabula have improved in growing coffee, bananas, rearing livestock and others. That’s the right path in order to get out of poverty,” he observed.
The ceremony drew several high-profile dignitaries and served as a powerful reminder of the nation’s gratitude to those who fought and continue to sacrifice for Uganda’s freedom and prosperity.
