Kamuli District has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of its LC V Chairperson, Maxwell Kuwembula Mugude, who perished in a fatal road accident in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Mugude was reportedly en route to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala to pick up nomination papers when the accident occurred in Nakifuma at around 4:40 am.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the incident in a statement.
“A fatal accident occurred today, June 12, 2025, at around 4:40 am in Nakifuma, involving two motor vehicles, UBR 835K and a Pajero UG 699M. The accident claimed the life of Kuwebula Maxwell, the LC 5 chairperson of Kamuli District,” Onyango said.
Police say officers from Naggalama are currently on the ground conducting investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash.
“Further details will be shared once available,” Onyango added.
The crash happened just hours after the Ministry of Works and Transport announced the suspension of automatic traffic fines. The decision followed public backlash, with many Ugandans describing the penalties as overly punitive.
Kuwembula’s sudden death has sent shockwaves across Busoga sub-region and the broader political landscape, especially as he was preparing to seek re-election on the ruling NRM party ticket.
More details will follow as the investigation progresses.
