During Uganda’s 36th Heroes Day Celebrations held in Lyantonde District, seven police officers were among the 50 individuals honoured for their outstanding service and contribution to the nation.
The event, which ran under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” was marked with solemnity, pride, and reflection on the sacrifices made by patriots throughout Uganda’s history.
Among the decorated officers was CP Ecega Richard, Commander of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, who received the prestigious Diamond Jubilee Medal, recognizing his exceptional leadership and commitment to maintaining law and order in the capital region.
SSP Kavuma Henry and Sergeant Turyakira Rose Margaret were each awarded the Long Service Gold Medal for their dedication and years of loyal service to the Uganda Police Force.
In a moving tribute to fallen heroes, Sergeant Mwende Godfrey (RIP) and Corporal Obala Bilal (RIP) were posthumously honoured with the Personal Sacrifice Medal, acknowledging their bravery and the ultimate price they paid in the line of duty.
Demonstrating remarkable courage, Corporal Mukisa Charles and Police Constable Ongier Chan Walter were each awarded the Gallantry Star Medal for acts of bravery that set them apart in service to the nation.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni led the day’s commemorations by laying a wreath at a monument in Kaliro Town Council, Lyantonde District, in memory of the fallen freedom fighters of the National Resistance Army (NRA) protracted war from 1981 to 1986, which ushered in the current National Resistance Movement (NRM) government. The Inspector General of Police also laid wreaths in honour of fallen officers.
The celebrations not only recognised present-day heroes but also reflected on the enduring legacy of the country’s liberators.
The awards to police officers served as a reminder of the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices made by security personnel in the pursuit of peace and justice in Uganda.
As the country continues to honour its heroes annually, the recognition of gallant police officers reaffirms the critical role they play in safeguarding the values and stability that the nation’s past heroes fought to achieve.
