In a swift counter-terrorism operation conducted early Tuesday morning, UPDF gunned down two suspected terrorists in Munyonyo meters away from the Catholic Basilica where part of the Martyr’s celebrations are being held.
The army confirmed that the duo was intercepted and killed following an intelligence-led mission aimed at averting any threats as Uganda commemorates the Uganda Martyrs day today.
“A UPDF counter-terrorism unit this morning intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale city suburb.”
“The security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” said Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, in an official statement issued shortly after the operation.
Although authorities withheld the identities of the suspects and specific details surrounding their intentions, they emphasized the need for increased public awareness and cooperation in maintaining national security.
“The general public is urged to remain calm but vigilant and report to the security services any suspicious individuals, objects or activities for immediate attention,” Magezi added.
The army reported no injuries or casualties among its personnel during the mission. Investigations into the circumstances of the operation and the background of the suspects remain ongoing.
