Uganda Police have arrested 16 suspects in connection with a series of violent incidents that have marred the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, according to an official police statement released Monday.
The violence, which broke out in Mubende, Isingiro, and Rubanda districts, involved armed confrontations, arson, vandalism, and physical assaults among rival supporters of NRM parliamentary candidates.
“We condemn all forms of violence and reassure the public that the perpetrators of violence will be held accountable,” police said in the statement, adding that investigations and operations remain ongoing.
The most severe of the clashes occurred in Mubende District on July 7, where a confrontation between supporters of Mr. Muhumuza Henry and Hon. Kabanda David, both NRM primary candidates, escalated into gunfire at Kyapa Kyeturege trading centre.
One person, Gumisiriza Roger, was injured during the exchange, while several others were assaulted with sticks and bricks.
Later, at Nabingola Sub County headquarters, further violence broke out, resulting in two vehicles and a motorcycle being set on fire and destroyed.
Police from Mubende CPS responded promptly, dispersed the attackers, and arrested three suspects. The injured were treated at Mubende Regional Hospital.
In a separate incident on July 5 in Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Subcounty, two motorcycles and one vehicle were torched in what authorities say was another politically motivated attack. Ten suspects were apprehended, while others involved are still at large.
Following the incident, police organized a security meeting on July 7 with NRM electoral officials and political actors in the area to emphasize the importance of peaceful conduct during the primaries.
On July 3, in Rubanda District, chaos erupted at Hakashanje Playground when stones were reportedly thrown at the convoy of Hon. Henry Musasizi after a campaign address. His vehicle sustained damage.
Earlier in the day, his campaign posters were also destroyed by a group of individuals. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the attack.
“Across these three incidents, a total of 16 suspects has been arrested, while some individuals have fled and abandoned their homes,” the police noted, emphasizing a nationwide commitment to keeping the election period safe and secure.
The Uganda Police Force has assured the public of its dedication to maintaining peace during the electoral process, particularly as tensions escalate ahead of the NRM primaries.
“We remain dedicated to maintaining peace to ensure a secure election,” the statement concluded.
As the investigations continue, the police urge all political actors and their supporters to reject violence and instead embrace lawful, peaceful participation in the electoral process.
