Carrying the Torch: Gen. Muhoozi’s Son Joins UPDF

Uganda’s First Family added another chapter to its longstanding tradition of national service as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, proudly announced the enlistment of his son, Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The news, revealed on Monday via Gen Muhoozi’s official X account, was met with enthusiasm and a flood of goodwill online with many Ugandans hailing the move as a noble continuation of a patriotic legacy.

“I’m extremely happy to announce that after 31 years in God’s Army, UPDF, God has blessed the House of Museveni with another soldier as of last month. Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, may Almighty God bless him as He did me,” Muhoozi wrote.

Private Ruhamya, the first-born son of Gen Muhoozi and grandson to President Yoweri Museveni, joined the UPDF quietly in June. His enlistment marks the emergence of a new generation within a family that has long been tied to the country’s defence and leadership.

Public Reactions: Patriotism and Cultural Pride

The announcement sparked an outpouring of support and celebration on social media, as Ugandans from across the country sent messages of congratulations and encouragement.

“Congratulations to Private Ruhamya Engoma! May God bless the journey he has started. I personally thank him for choosing the right path of serving his country,” wrote Mbaho Joshua.

“Huge congrats to the young superstar, Afande RK! We’re beyond proud of you!” added Great Kwiza Nantaba.

Others drew inspiration from the symbolism of the move, with Ssebunya declaring, “Bjorn Ruhamya Kainerugaba. He will be greater than his father and grandfather.”

Some supporters evoked cultural heritage and legacy, including Allan Bamuha, who said: “Congratulations, Omuchwezi Ruhamya, may you continue to carry on the legacy of Bacwezi. Hold the Spear, Shield, and Flames high.”

Krystal Uwera joined the chorus of encouragement: “Another brave soul joins the ranks to serve our great nation. Uganda is proud.” Meanwhile, Csl Joshua Byamazima noted the inspiration behind the move, saying: “You have inspired many to join the army, congratulations to Private Ruhamya.”

A Milestone in a Storied Legacy

While many see Ruhamya’s enlistment as a personal decision to serve the country, others also view it as a milestone in the Museveni family’s continuing commitment to national service.

From President Museveni’s historic rise through military ranks to Gen Muhoozi’s current role as CDF, the family’s dedication to Uganda’s defence has spanned decades. Ruhamya’s entry into the UPDF is being seen by many as a natural progression of that legacy.

Though no formal political implications have been drawn, some observers believe this generational handover within the military sphere could shape the narrative of leadership and national service in years to come.
