Entebbe International Airport has taken a significant step in transforming passenger experience with the official unveiling of its brand-new Karibuni VIP Lounge, a stylish and comfortable space aimed at enhancing travel for both arriving and departing guests.
The state-of-the-art lounge was formally opened on Friday by Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, as part of a broader transformation plan for the country’s aviation hub.
Located within the soon-to-be-completed terminal extension, the Karibuni Lounge is designed with passenger comfort and functionality in mind.
The space offers a serene and modern environment, furnished with plush blue carpets, clusters of cushioned armchairs and sofas, and convenient tables for personal items or refreshments.
A polished grey granite walkway runs elegantly through the centre, complemented by recessed lighting that casts a bright and calming glow.
The result is a space that exudes both professionalism and relaxation a haven for travellers seeking comfort or a quiet place to work before boarding.
The lounge sits within the 20,000-square-metre new terminal building, a highly anticipated upgrade that’s now in its final stages of completion.
Minister Katumba Wamala confirmed that the full terminal is expected to be officially unveiled in the coming weeks.
The new terminal is a flagship project under Uganda’s National Aviation Master Plan (2014–2033) a $586 million infrastructure initiative aimed at modernising Entebbe and increasing its passenger handling capacity. Construction is being executed by China Communication Construction Company (CCCC).
Once fully operational, the terminal will boost Entebbe’s annual passenger capacity from 2 million to 3.5 million, with future expansions targeting 6.1 million passengers by 2033.
The Karibuni Lounge is just one piece of a larger upgrade. Other completed improvements include:
A 100,000-tonne capacity cargo centre
Fully resurfaced runways
Refurbished aircraft aprons
Currently underway are:
The installation of three new aerobridges
Expansion of Apron 1
A cutting-edge Baggage Handling System capable of processing up to 1,800 bags per hour, tripling the airport’s previous capacity
The overall transformation of Entebbe International Airport reflects Uganda’s commitment to regional competitiveness and passenger satisfaction.
The modernisation is not only enhancing the visual appeal of the facility but also significantly improving efficiency, safety, and user experience.
