One person was killed and four others injured in a deadly road crash involving a Gateway Bus in the early hours of Monday, July 21, 2025, along the Katosi–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.

The accident occurred at around 1:30 AM at Katovu in Ngongwe, and involved a Scania bus, registration number UA 354AN, operated by Gateway Bus Company.

The vehicle was on route from Kampala to Soroti using the Katosi corridor when tragedy struck.

According to Kananura Michael, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the cause of the crash has been linked to a mechanical failure.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by a front tyre burst, leading the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus overturned on its right side, resulting in the instant death of the driver and injuries to four passengers of varying severity,” Kananura said.

Emergency responders arrived at the crash site shortly after the incident. The injured were transported to Nkonkonjeru Health Centre and Kawolo Hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, the driver’s body was transferred to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem.

“We regret the loss of life in this unfortunate incident and extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased,” Kananura sympathized with the family.

The wreckage was later towed to Ngongwe Police Station, and a formal investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Kananura urged motorists to take preventive measures seriously, especially when it comes to vehicle maintenance and road safety.

“Authorities urge all motorists to conduct regular vehicle maintenance checks and strictly adhere to road safety regulations to help prevent such tragic incidents,” he said.
