It was a joyful and memorable weekend for the family of Minister of Security, Maj Gen (rtd) Jim Muhwezi, and his wife Susan Kabonero Muhwezi, as they gave away their daughter, Sandra Kekirunga Muhwezi, in a traditional ceremony held at their home in Rukungiri District.

The event attracted high-profile guests and was graced by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who attended as the official representative of President Yoweri Museveni.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Deputy Speaker shared the honour he felt in standing in for the President:

“Yesterday, I had the honour of representing H.E. @KagutaMuseveni at the giveaway ceremony of Sandra Kekirunga Muhwezi, daughter of @jkmuhwezi and Mrs. Susan Kabonero Muhwezi, at their home in Rukungiri district,” Tayebwa posted.

In remarks delivered on behalf of President Museveni, Tayebwa conveyed the President’s gratitude to God for blessing Uganda’s liberation heroes with family and legacy.

“In the remarks I delivered on behalf of the President, he expressed his gratitude to God for blessing freedom fighters like Gen. Jim with wonderful families,” he stated.

Reflecting on Uganda’s liberation struggle, the President’s message honoured the risks taken by fighters like Jim Muhwezi.

“When they chose to fight for Uganda, they took great risks, and none of them knew whether they would liberate the country, return home, or ever have families. But they won the liberation fight, and God has further rewarded the liberators with long life and the joy of seeing their children grow up and start families of their own.”

President Museveni also applauded the Muhwezi family for upholding traditional marriage customs, which he described as vital to Ugandan culture.

To the newly engaged couple, the President’s message emphasised foundational values:

“To the bride and groom, the President encouraged them to anchor their marriage on faithfulness, love, open communication, and mutual commitment.”

The Deputy Speaker also offered personal advice to the couple, encouraging humility and shared responsibility.

“I also advised the couple to be willing to sacrifice for each other to build a lasting family. I urged them to apologise when they wrong one another and to always pray together.”

While the groom was only identified as Josh, the ceremony brought together a distinguished guest list that included former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, Minister Alice Karamuzi Kaboyo, Prince Daudi Kintu Wasajja, businessman Bob Kabonero, and Ambassador Richard Kabonero, among others.

The ceremony marked a blend of tradition, honour, and celebration not only of love but of legacy.
