Muhammad Nsereko Ditches Parliament, Sets Sights on Museveni’s Seat

Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has officially declared his intention to contest for Uganda’s presidency in the 2026 general elections, setting the stage for a fresh political challenge centered on accessibility, grassroots engagement, and new political thinking.

Having served in Parliament since 2011, Nsereko is no stranger to Uganda’s political arena.

Yet his next move marks a bold shift in trajectory from legislator to presidential hopeful.

Speaking on his decision, Nsereko underlined the cornerstone of his campaign:

“Being an easy reach for every citizen in Uganda is what makes my bid for the presidential seat very important,” he said.

For the outspoken MP, accessibility is not just about open doors but open ears listening to citizens’ real concerns and designing responsive, people-centered policies.

Last year, Nsereko announced that he would not seek re-election as Kampala Central MP, saying it was time to make space for young leaders to step up. “I’ve done my part here,” he signaled at the time. Now, he says, the focus is squarely on national leadership.

He is running under the banner of the Ecological Party of Uganda (EPU) a silent political formation that he believes embodies accountability, innovation, and a long-overdue commitment to environmental stewardship in governance.

While little is yet known about the EPU’s full platform, Nsereko’s association with it signals a pivot toward alternative politics away from traditional party structures and toward what he describes as “fresh approaches” to solving Uganda’s challenges.

Unafraid to criticize both the government and fellow opposition leaders, he has cultivated an image of independence, one that could prove a potent asset as he seeks to widen his appeal nationally.

His entry into the 2026 race adds to what is shaping up to be a dynamic and potentially fragmented political contest. With new parties forming and public frustration growing around the country’s long-standing political structures, voices like Nsereko’s could resonate with voters hungry for direct leadership and new solutions.

Whether his vision will translate into votes remains to be seen. But what’s clear is that Muhammad Nsereko is betting big on a campaign rooted in presence, policy, and the power of being “an easy reach” for the people he seeks to lead.
