President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni have officially kicked off Uganda’s campaign to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), unveiling the tournament’s official logo, jersey, and digital platforms in a high-profile launch at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The event, held on Friday, drew a cross-section of dignitaries, including officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Confederation of African Football (CAF) representatives, and the local media.

“This tournament symbolises much more than just sport. It is a powerful vehicle for enhancing our global image and creating business opportunities,” President Museveni said, as he and the First Lady—also the Minister of Education and Sports—unveiled the CHAN 2024 jersey before a cheering crowd.

Positioning the championship as a catalyst for both national development and continental cooperation, the President praised the progress Uganda has made in preparing to host the regional football event.

He linked Uganda’s readiness to the government’s long-standing efforts to build peace, expand education, and invest in infrastructure, especially sports facilities.

“Since coming into power, we have established peace and expanded education. Now, stadiums are being built, and sport has been boosted,” Museveni remarked. “CHAN has challenged us in a positive way to act, and we embrace this pressure.”

Uganda will co-host CHAN 2024 alongside Kenya and Tanzania—a historic first for the East African region.

The trio’s joint bid to host the tournament has been celebrated as a diplomatic win and a powerful symbol of regional unity.

“Our joint bid represents a significant step towards regional cohesion and the unity of East Africa,” the President said, emphasizing the wider implications of hosting such a continental tournament beyond just football.

He urged Ugandans to take pride in the country’s hosting role and to view CHAN 2024 as an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s hospitality, vibrancy, and competitive edge.

The event also served as the launchpad for a coordinated media campaign, with digital platforms set up to promote the tournament both locally and internationally.

Branding previews, including the official CHAN 2024 logo and promotional materials, were displayed for the first time to the public.

With less than six months to kick-off, the unveiling marks a major milestone in Uganda’s journey toward hosting a high-stakes tournament, which brings together Africa’s best home-based footballers and promises a boost in tourism, commerce, and national pride.
