President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is today expected to be formally nominated as the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2026 General Elections.
The nomination ceremony, scheduled to take place at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, crowns months of nationwide mobilization and engagement led by the President himself.
According to a statement released Friday by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU), the upcoming nomination marks a significant political moment as Uganda heads toward the next general election cycle.
“The enthusiasm surrounding President Museveni’s candidacy reflects a widespread appreciation for the achievements made under his presidency, particularly in fostering a peaceful and stable environment that has enabled Uganda to flourish,” the PPU statement noted.
President Museveni’s formal bid follows an extensive countrywide tour that covered all 18 zones of Uganda, centred around the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM)—a flagship initiative aimed at improving household incomes and reducing poverty from the parish level upward.
These wealth creation tours, which doubled as grassroots consultations, saw the President interact directly with citizens, local leaders, and community influencers. Across all regions, the feedback was consistent—calls for continuity in leadership.
“Ugandans from various regions underscored how the peace cultivated over decades has been a fundamental pillar for growth across numerous sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development,” the statement highlighted.
Supporters and party leaders alike have pointed to the visible gains achieved under Museveni’s tenure, crediting his steady leadership for ushering in long-term peace and national transformation.
Among the highlighted achievements were improvements in agriculture, education, infrastructure, and healthcare all described as outcomes made possible by the stable environment the President has maintained since assuming office in 1986.
In accordance with party regulations, all aspirants vying for the top NRM positions must secure at least 100 endorsement signatures from members of the National Conference, drawn from various regions across the country.
By Friday, Museveni had successfully met this threshold.
“By Friday, Museveni had already secured the requisite endorsements, further demonstrating the depth of support he commands within the party structures and across the country,” the PPU affirmed.
With today’s nomination expected to be a formality, party officials say the NRM is now poised to enter the campaign season with renewed energy and a message anchored in stability, transformation, and progress.
“Party officials have described the upcoming nomination as a significant milestone that will set the stage for a vigorous electoral campaign ahead of the 2026 polls.”
