Police in Kajjansi have arrested a man believed to be behind a recent surge in phone snatching incidents across the area.
The suspect, identified as Kizito Yasin alias Mr. Kampala, was apprehended following an investigation into a robbery reported by a female victim earlier this week.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the arrest stems from a case reported on July 29, 2025, when Ayebale Pearl was robbed of her phone by two men riding a red Haojue motorcycle as she made her way to work.
The incident was registered at AKRIGHT Police Station under a case of simple robbery.
“After receiving the complaint, our officers launched a swift investigation which led to the arrest of one of the suspects, Kizito Yasin. He was found in possession of a red Haojue motorcycle with suspiciously tilted number plates,” said SSP Onyango.
The victim positively identified Kizito as one of the culprits involved in the robbery.
Police believe he may be connected to a wider network of petty criminals targeting pedestrians and commuters along busy roads in the Kajjansi area and beyond.
Further investigations revealed that Kizito had only recently completed a two-year sentence at Kigo Prison for a similar offense. His release coincided with a noticeable rise in phone snatching cases in the division raising strong suspicion that he had returned to criminal activity.
“We want to commend the vigilance of our officers in quickly apprehending this repeat offender,” Onyango said. “This arrest sends a clear message to others engaged in similar crimes that we are watching, and they will be brought to justice.”
SSP Onyango added that police are now pursuing the second suspect, who remains at large. Authorities are also examining whether Kizito is linked to additional robberies reported in recent weeks.
The suspect is currently in custody as detectives finalize the case file for prosecution.
