Four people have been confirmed dead and 13 others injured in a horrific road crash that occurred early Tuesday morning at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo Road.
According to police, the accident took place at around 6:40AM and involved a motor vehicle, registration number UA 889AM, which first knocked and killed a pedestrian before veering off the road and plunging into River Malaba.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle was being driven at high speed when the driver failed to avoid a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.
The collision reportedly caused the driver to lose control, strike the bridge rail, and plunge into the river below, killing three passengers on board and injuring 13 others, including the driver himself.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to Tororo Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police have since towed the wreckage to Busia Central Police Station as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.
Police Public Relations Officer Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety SP Michael Kananura said the tragedy underscores the consequences of reckless driving.
“It’s a painful reminder that excessive speed can be deadly. We continue to appeal to all motorists to observe speed limits and give way to pedestrians, especially in busy areas,” SP Kananura said.
The police are urging drivers to exercise caution and responsibility while on the road to prevent further loss of life.
