Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops have been urged to shun reckless lifestyles and uphold values of discipline, honesty, and accountability as critical foundations for their careers in the military.
While officiating at the graduation ceremony of three military courses held at the School of Supplies and Transport (SOST) in Gadaffi Barracks, Jinja City, the Commander of Jinja Cantonment, Brig Gen Emmanuel Kanyesigye, sounded a strong warning to the graduates, particularly on the dangers of alcoholism and promiscuity.
“You are young, brilliant, and have a bright future. HIV/AIDS is real and remains a serious threat. Avoid living recklessly, it could cost you your life,” Brig Gen Kanyesigye cautioned, in remarks that framed the day’s core message.
The four-month training program saw the graduation of 223 participants, drawn from three specialized courses: the Basic Stores Management Course, the Drivers Refresher Course, and the Truck Drivers Course.
In his keynote speech, Brig Gen Kanyesigye reminded the troops that technical training alone isn’t enough to sustain a soldier in the UPDF without character and integrity.
“Logistics is a science and the engine of UPDF operations. You must uphold our core principles of discipline, honesty, hard work, and accountability to ensure success and professionalism within the force,” he said.
He further commended the UPDF leadership for investing in capacity building, noting that professional training remains a cornerstone of the army’s operational effectiveness.
Col JB Katongole, the Commandant of SOST, announced that the Basic Stores Management Course had trained 123 participants, the Drivers Refresher Course had 61, and the Truck Drivers Course had 39. He also pointed out recent developments at the school, including the renovation of key infrastructure and the setting up of a computer lab to enhance digital literacy among trainees.
