Police in Katwe have arrested 35 suspects believed to be part of criminal gangs behind a wave of motorcycle thefts and violent robberies targeting boda boda riders in Makindye Division.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation in Wansanso Zone, Kibuye II Parish, on the afternoon of August 12, 2025. According to police, the crackdown targeted garages suspected of dealing in stolen motorcycles and spare parts.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said the operation was prompted by public outcry over rampant attacks on riders in the area.
“We carried out a targeted operation against criminal gangs allegedly operating from garages in Wansanso Zone. We managed to arrest 35 suspects and recover several exhibits,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police recovered nine Bajaj Boxer motorcycles some with registration numbers UFL 083U, UFW 693H, UET 495A, UFU 306W, UDS 592K, UFA 841M, UEL 401N, UFC 050L, and one without a number plate as well as numerous motorcycle parts.
Owoyesigyire noted that the suspects will be charged once investigations are complete, adding that police will continue collaborating with local leaders and vigilante groups to combat the vice.
“We are committed to restoring safety for motorcycle operators in the area,” he said.
