The Electoral Commission (EC) has kicked off the nomination season for the 2026 general elections, beginning with presidential hopefuls.
According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, presidential hopefuls have from today August 11 to August 24 to collect the necessary paperwork, including supporter forms, nomination forms, and detailed nomination guidelines.
The supporter forms will allow candidates to gather endorsements from at least 100 registered voters in no fewer than two-thirds of Uganda’s districts a total of 98 districts, as stipulated under the country’s electoral laws.
“These supporters must be registered voters in the districts where they endorse a candidate,” Mucunguzi explained in a statement.
The nomination forms will capture the personal and political details of each candidate, while the guidelines will set out the specific requirements needed for a valid nomination.
The EC has also streamlined access to documents for other categories of political contenders.
Parliamentary aspirants, including those contesting for special interest group seats, can now download nomination forms and guidelines directly from the EC’s official website (www.ec.or.ug).
District and city chairperson aspirants will equally access their forms online, while local government councillor aspirants will obtain theirs from EC offices at the district level.
Mucunguzi urged all political hopefuls to read the guidelines carefully and ensure they meet every legal requirement before submission.
“We encourage aspirants to acquaint themselves fully with the nomination guidelines to avoid disqualification,” he said.
In a scheduling update, the EC spokesperson announced that parliamentary nominations, originally slated for September, will now take place on October 15 and 16, while nomination dates for other positions remain unchanged.
