Police in Kibuku District are investigating the death of 30-year-old fisherman Minjo Yokana, who drowned in River Mpologoma on Saturday morning after his boat capsized during a fishing expedition.
The tragedy occurred at about 3:00 AM as Yokana and his colleague, Matono Godfrey, were pulling in fishing nets. According to eyewitness accounts, a sudden, powerful wave struck their boat, overturning it. While Matono managed to swim ashore, Yokana was swept away by the river’s strong current.
Relatives later retrieved his body and took it to an undisclosed location before notifying police at Kasasira Police Post. The incident was first reported to Kibuku Police Station by Kyenyi John, the LC1 Chairperson of Nansonko Cell, Bugiri Parish.
Police have opened an inquiry under Kasasira SD 03/30/08/25, and statements have been recorded from the survivor and family members.
However, Bukedi North Police PRO ASP Kyempasa Wilfred revealed that the body was not recovered from the actual scene and no postmortem examination was conducted.
Authorities have since cautioned fishermen in the area to exercise greater vigilance and take safety measures seriously, warning that unpredictable weather conditions on River Mpologoma can pose serious risks.
