At least five people have been killed in a mob attack in Namanoga village, Seeta Namuganga Sub County, Mukono District.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on Friday when a group of youths from Kampala, who had traveled to attend a music show at Lions Bar, reportedly engaged in acts that angered residents.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the youths were accused of using fake notes and pickpocketing during the event, which sparked off a violent confrontation with the villagers,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, said in a statement.
The mob descended on the group, killing five of them and torching the taxi they had traveled in, a Toyota Hiace registration number UBD 326X.
Onyango confirmed that police had secured the burnt-out vehicle and conveyed the bodies to Kayunga Hospital for post-mortem examination. Statements from survivors and witnesses have also been recorded.
“The scene has been secured, and investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Onyango added.
Authorities have condemned the act of mob justice, urging the public to always report suspected criminals to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
