City businessman Hamis Kiggundu, also known as Ham, has begun a major cleanup of the downstream section of the Nakivubo channel to pave the way for its full redevelopment.

The operation, which deployed heavy machinery, trucks, and a workforce to dredge waste, debris, and sediment, marks the groundwork for a long-awaited redevelopment project expected to change the face of downtown Kampala.

Long notorious for flooding, pollution, and poor sanitation, the Nakivubo channel is now being positioned for a future that blends modern drainage infrastructure with commercial redevelopment.

“This is not just about cleaning; it’s about preparing the foundation for lasting development,” Ham said at the site. “We are committed to working with relevant authorities to ensure that this project benefits the people and the city.”

Ham, who is also spearheading the multi-billion-shilling redevelopment of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, has pledged that the channel project will introduce modern flood control systems, service lanes, and water filtration chambers, with the possibility of commercial spaces integrated above the upgraded infrastructure.

The upcoming construction phase is expected to cover and modernize the channel, restore its functionality, and enhance the aesthetics of Kampala’s bustling downtown.

Photos and videos from today’s effort captured dredging machines at work, heaps of garbage hauled away, and crews clearing the way for what Ham’s team is branding as the new chapter of Kampala’s urban renewal.
