Record-Breaking Start to 2026 Race as 51 Aspirants Eye Uganda’s Top Seat

Uganda’s 2026 presidential race has opened with an unprecedented stampede of hopefuls, as 51 people rushed to pick nomination papers on day one — the highest first-day figure in the nation’s political history.

The Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that the early list features six women and 45 men, most of them young contenders eager to challenge for the country’s highest office.

“This shows that young Ugandans are stepping forward to shape the future of our democracy,” said EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi.

Aspirants have until August 24 to collect nomination documents, which include supporter forms, candidate information sheets, and detailed nomination guidelines.

The Road to Nomination

According to Mucunguzi, each presidential hopeful must secure signatures from at least 100 registered voters in no fewer than two-thirds of Uganda’s districts — equivalent to 98 districts — in line with electoral law. Supporters must be eligible voters in the district where they sign.

Nomination forms capture the candidate’s particulars, while the guidelines outline all conditions for a valid nomination.

Beyond the Presidency

The EC has also opened the process for other elective positions. Parliamentary aspirants, including representatives for special interest groups, can now download their forms from the EC website. District and city chairperson candidates will also access forms online, while those running for local government councillor seats can collect theirs from EC district offices.

Parliamentary nominations will now take place on October 15 and 16 instead of September, but all other dates remain unchanged.

With the political season officially in motion, the record-breaking turnout has set the stage for what could be Uganda’s most competitive and unpredictable presidential race yet.
