Authorities at Masindi Government Prison are investigating a tragic case of inmate-on-inmate violence that left one prisoner dead in the early hours of Saturday, August 3, 2025.

According to a press release issued by the Uganda Prisons Service, the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. inside the prison’s TB isolation ward, where two inmates—Moses Tuhame and Anatoli Irumba—were being held.

Tuhame, a convicted prisoner (No. MDI/829/2023) who had been sentenced for aggravated defilement, sustained severe injuries following an attack by remand prisoner Anatoli Irumba (No. R-534/25), who is awaiting trial for the murder of his mother.

After the attack, prison staff rushed the victim to Masindi Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

The Uganda Police have since taken over the investigation, and a postmortem examination is underway. Officials have confirmed that the body will be handed over to the deceased’s family once medical and legal procedures are complete.

Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Deputy Director CCA/Service Spokesperson, expressed sorrow over the incident:

“The Uganda Prisons Service extends deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. May the soul of Moses Tuhame rest in eternal peace,” Baine said.

The Uganda Prisons Service has assured the public of its full cooperation with police authorities to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated and appropriate actions taken.

This latest case adds to growing concerns about inmate safety and the need for improved classification, mental health screening, and supervision in Uganda’s correctional facilities.
