The Police in Nsangi are holding six people following an operation against reckless travel along the Kampala–Masaka highway.

According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, six suspects the driver and five passengers of a Toyota Hiace registration number UBH 183S were arrested after the vehicle was intercepted while dangerously overloaded with 31 passengers.

Police say 18 passengers were squeezed inside the van while 13 others were found riding on top. The vehicle’s number plates had also been deliberately concealed.

Traffic Police PRO, SP Michael Kananura, confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were on their way to attend a football match in Buwama, Mpigi District.

“The passengers have been charged with riding in a dangerous position, while the driver is facing multiple charges including concealing a number plate, driving out of class, and breach of operator’s license,” SP Kananura explained.

He added that the operation was made possible through surveillance cameras, part of the ongoing effort to monitor and curb dangerous road behavior.

Following the arrests, some of the passengers stormed Nsangi Police Station demanding the release of their colleagues. The protest was quickly contained, with three more suspects apprehended for obstruction and inciting violence. The rest of the group was dispersed.

“We strongly condemn this kind of reckless and unlawful behavior. Such actions not only violate traffic regulations but also endanger lives. Traffic has recorded tragic crashes linked to such negligence, leading to loss of lives and serious injuries,” SP Kananura said.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has vowed to maintain strict enforcement of road laws and urged the public to adhere to regulations.

“We call upon all road users to observe traffic rules and refrain from acts that compromise road safety or interfere with lawful police duties,” Kananura emphasized.
