The Electoral Commission has urged presidential aspirants to submit proposed campaign schedules as part of the requirements for nomination in the 2026 Presidential Elections.

According to the Commission, the campaign programmes will help harmonize activities once the nomination exercise concludes. Campaigns are expected to officially begin on 29th September 2025.

In a statement, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, emphasized that the nomination exercise will be conducted on Tuesday, 23rd and Wednesday, 24th September 2025 at the EC Head Office Grounds in Lubowa, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

“A person aspiring for nomination as Presidential Candidate shall be a citizen of Uganda by birth, a registered voter, of 18 years and above, and must present proof of minimum formal education of Advanced Level or its equivalent, among other requirements,” Justice Byabakama explained.

Each aspirant must also be endorsed by at least 100 registered voters from not less than 98 districts, representing two-thirds of the country.

Other requirements include nomination papers in triplicate, proof of voter registration, three passport-size photographs, a certificate of compliance from the EC, and payment of a UGX 20 million non-refundable nomination fee.

Byabakama also cautioned aspirants against drawing crowds to the nomination venue.

“An aspirant shall be allowed into the nomination venue accompanied by not more than twenty persons. They will also be permitted to use only two vehicles, each carrying a maximum of ten people, driver inclusive. Processions are strictly prohibited,” he stressed.

For independent aspirants, selection of a symbol and appointment of an official agent will also be mandatory.

The Uganda Police Force has released traffic management plans for routes leading to the nomination venue, and security is expected to be tight.

Byabakama noted that successful candidates will only be declared duly nominated after all documents are verified.

“We call upon all aspirants, their agents and supporters to follow the guidelines. This will enable the Commission to conduct the exercise in an orderly, peaceful and safe manner,” he said.
