Electoral Commission Reschedules Nomination Dates Ahead of NAM Conference

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced changes to the nomination dates for Parliamentary candidates, citing Uganda’s role as host of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Mid-term Review Conference in October 2025.

According to EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, the nomination of candidates for Parliamentary Elections, including Special Interest Groups (Youths, Persons with Disabilities, Workers, and Older Persons), has been pushed from the earlier dates of 15th–16th October 2025 to 22nd–23rd October 2025.

The exercise will be conducted at the offices of District and City Returning Officers.

Justice Byabakama explained that the adjustment was necessary to allow the country to fully focus on the upcoming international conference.

“This adjustment is necessitated by Uganda’s role as host of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Mid-term Review Conference, which will bring together government officials, legislators, and representatives from NAM member states and international agencies,” he said.

“Key government institutions will be directly involved in planning, security, and diplomatic coordination during that period, hence the need to adjust the nomination schedule.”

In addition to the changes for Parliamentary nominations, the EC also revised the campaign period for Presidential candidates. Presidential nominations will take place on 23rd–24th September 2025, followed by harmonization of campaign programmes from 25th–27th September 2025. Campaigns will officially run from 29th September 2025 until 12th January 2026.

Campaigns for Parliamentary and Local Government candidates will begin later, from 10th November 2025 and run concurrently until 12th January 2026.

Polling for all elective positions — Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Councils — is scheduled to take place between 12th January and 9th February 2026, in line with Article 61(2) of the Constitution.

Justice Byabakama reassured Ugandans that the Commission remains committed to delivering a transparent and well-coordinated electoral process.

“In light of this adjustment, we call upon all stakeholders to take note of the revised dates and prepare accordingly. A detailed copy of the electoral roadmap is available on the Commission’s website,” he added.
