A local man, Gerald Mutalya, was electrocuted on September 12 while attempting to make an unauthorized electricity connection along Sentema Road in Natete, Wakiso District, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has confirmed.

According to UEDCL, Mutalya, a resident of Nakuwade, was not employed by the company or any contractors authorized to perform electrical maintenance on the distribution network.

He was attempting an illegal connection on a 33kV feeder from Mutundwe Substation when the incident occurred at around 3:00 pm.

“We sympathize with the family of the departed. May the spirit of the departed find eternal peace,” said Jonan Kiiza, Head of Corporate & Stakeholder Affairs at UEDCL.

The company said investigations are ongoing, and a case has been filed at the Natete Police Station.

UEDCL warned the public, especially unauthorized individuals locally referred to as “Kamyufus,” against tampering with the electricity distribution network due to the severe risk to human life.

UEDCL urged residents to report any electricity-related issues or safety concerns through its toll-free numbers: 0800203088, 0800285285, 0800385385, or via WhatsApp on 0772 285285.

“Assist UEDCL in maintaining public safety,” Kiiza added, stressing the importance of using official channels for electricity services.
