The Uganda Cranes were all smiles at State House Entebbe after President Yoweri Museveni delivered on his promise and handed them a UGX 2.4 billion reward for their victories at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Ahead of the tournament, Museveni had pledged UGX 1.2 billion for every game won. The Cranes managed two wins before their quarterfinal exit to Senegal, securing the full package.
The team received the cheque during a dinner hosted by the President and First Lady Janet Museveni — a moment that drew cheers and gratitude from players and officials alike.
Museveni praised the squad’s spirit, saying their performance deserved national recognition.
“This evening, Maama and I hosted the Uganda Cranes for dinner at Entebbe after their commendable performance in the tournament,” he said.
The President also shared a personal reflection on their style of play, likening it to lessons from his military career.
“I took the opportunity to share a brief analysis of their game. As I joined Maama to watch the Cranes playing against Algeria recently in Nakasero, I reflected on a principle I often teach in the military: every Force has an Area of Responsibility (AOR). When everyone goes on the offensive and leaves the defense and goalkeeper exposed, the opponent can easily exploit that gap. That was my analysis of the game. However, as we say in Swahili, ‘Tafadhali,’ our team’s efforts cannot go unappreciated. The Cranes fought valiantly.”
For Museveni, keeping his word was more than symbolic — it was a strategy to build morale.
“As promised, we have fulfilled our pledge to them, as motivation is an essential part of building capacity,” he said.
The President further applauded the Local Organizing Committee, chaired by First Lady Janet Museveni, for steering Uganda’s first-ever continental football tournament to success.
“Finally, I want to congratulate the Local Organizing Committee for successfully hosting our first continental tournament, in partnership with Kenya and Tanzania. This event was not only a sports competition but also a lesson in unity and regional capacity,” he added.
As the team posed for photos with their cheque, excitement was evident among the players — a clear sign that the financial reward had boosted their morale.
Beyond the celebration, the gesture also underscored government’s commitment to recognizing national teams and encouraging stronger performances in future competitions.
