The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially presented more than two million signatures to the Electoral Commission (EC), backing President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination as the party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2026 general elections.
The submission, made on Friday at the EC headquarters in Kampala, was led by the party’s Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, who was flanked by senior officials and a spirited crowd of NRM leaders and supporters.
“We have handed in more than two million signatures, and this is confirmation of the votes President Museveni is going to have. Already, we have deposited our votes with the Electoral Commission,” Todwong said, expressing confidence in Museveni’s nationwide support.
He further noted that the overwhelming response underscored the NRM’s grassroots strength, predicting sweeping victories for both the President and the party’s candidates at all levels in 2026.
Party officials hailed the exercise as more than a procedural requirement, describing it as a symbolic gesture of loyalty and a pledge to safeguard NRM’s political achievements while advancing Uganda’s development agenda.
Under Electoral Commission guidelines, each presidential aspirant must secure at least 100 signatures from two-thirds of Uganda’s 146 districts—a minimum of 98 districts—before nomination. By submitting over two million endorsements, the NRM has surpassed the threshold by a wide margin.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled presidential nominations for September 23 and 24, 2025, marking a critical step in the journey toward the 2026 polls.
