The Uganda Police has dismissed claims that musician and politician Ali Buken, better known as Nubian Li, was arrested shortly after being nominated as Nakawa Mayor.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire clarified that Nubian Li was never in custody but was only escorted by police officers to avoid traffic disruptions.
“There’s been no arrest of Nubian Li. What I want to confirm is that the police that was at EC received information, but Nubian Li and his colleagues had planned the procession of vehicles and boda bodas as they were coming from the nomination center in Ntinda and the procession was going to go through the busy centers, and we believe this could have caused a lot of jam and some impending chaos. So they were escorted safely. I can inform you that he’s at his place, no arrest has been done,” Owoyesigyire said.
The police statement followed allegations from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), which claimed the singer was bundled into a police truck and taken to an undisclosed location after his nomination.
NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi had alleged that Nubian Li was arrested only minutes after completing his nomination process.
However, police have firmly refuted this account, insisting that the candidate was simply guided home for security and traffic management reasons.
