Police in Jinja have recovered a rusty gun and 15 rounds of ammunition that had been abandoned in a garden at Busowoko Central, Nawampanda Parish, Butagaya Sub County.
The weapon, wrapped in a sack, was found by resident Monica Namugaya during routine gardening. She immediately alerted local leaders before security teams were called in.
“It was discovered by a resident, Monica Namugaya, who was gardening when she came across a sack containing a rusty gun. She informed the chairperson veterans Nawampanda Parish, Shaban Mazereba, who later notified the area GISO and police,” said Kiira Regional Police spokesperson SP James Mubi.
A joint security team led by Major Ishaka, commanding officer of the 129 Battalion in Buikwe District, assessed the firearm and launched further investigations.
Police believe the gun may have been used in criminal operations across Busoga and other regions.
“The recovered gun is purported to have been terrorizing Busoga and other areas before being abandoned,” SP Mubi noted, urging residents to remain alert and cooperative with security authorities.
Regional Police Commander SSP Charles Nsaba praised Ms. Namugaya and the Butagaya community for their vigilance, saying their prompt action helped in securing the recovery.
